The design is in elegant Louis XVI / Neo Classical style, having inverted fluting gadroon body with berried laurel swags and ribbon border decoration. The top finial and side handles are embellished with acanthus leaves interlaced with ribbon.
Hallmarked French Mercure No.1 Titre mark, which guaranteed .950 purity solid sterling silver, used in Paris since 1878 for exportation. There are also French silversmith's lozenge maker mark, and unidentified old mark on the lids.
