Offered for your consideration is this beautiful Antique French Sterling Silver Cigarette/Small Cigar Case or Trinket/Jewelry/Snuff Box in quite excellent shape. This lovely & rare case is wholly made of the finest quality French sterling silver .950 purity. A classic and versatile square shape with round corners. The lid is finely embellished with Repoussé (embossed) decoration, including bellied laurel, blooming flowers, roses, foliage, ribbons, acanthus motifs and a star. This box's main attraction is a raised portrait of a young child's profile in rectangular frame, with interlaced ribbon, dated "6 Avril (April) 1896".
Repoussé, the technique used to create the pattern, is done by hand and very difficult to master. A sheet of silver is heated and the pattern raised from the reverse side using tools of different shapes. You can see the fine craftsmanship on this case's lid - it's beautiful even from the reverse side.
