AS HANDSOME AS useful, this beautiful Antique European Gilt Solid Silver Bonbon Dish or Valet Tray, Vide-Poche in French, would look great in any space. It is wholly made of solid silver (not silver-plated) and having gorgeous vermeil (gold-washed over solid silver) finish on the surface. The Dish consists of two side handles and an uniquely shaped serving area. The technique used to create the pattern is called Repoussé (embossed.) A sheet of silver is heated and the pattern raised from the reverse side using tools of different shapes. It is done by hand and difficult to master. It depicts a winged cherub and different kind of berried plants within boldly beautiful pearlé borders.
Hallmarked 2 unknown marks, should be an essayer mark and a maker's stamp, but we could not find the reference. Presumably this is continental European production from mid to late 19th Century. Acid tested as gold washed over solid silver (not silver-plated.)
